Jens Stegger Ledaal is a Norwegian artist (born 1975), working in sculpture, film and printmaking. In 2007, he founded a project called Art Militia (now called "Spatial Ops") utilizing the tools and structures of military organization to create works at the intersection of land art and performance. The current practice consists of exercises and expeditions where the overarching goal is to carry out artistic gestures with different landscapes as the workspace. Creating compositions of modular sculpture interacting with the landscape is a central and repetitive act in this process. These projects are documented and presented in video and photo. The core idea has always been the same - appropriation and application of military ideas and methods as tools for art. From the explicit and concrete in the beginning - like paint artillery - to our current understanding of movement through terrain as a conscious sculptural act.
